Wholesome Child is an Australian based company focused on providing parents with information and advice on how to feed their children healthy foods through workshops, the blog and the Wholesome Child Cookbook.

When I began working on this project the refresh design was about two-thirds complete. I was specifically tasked to "help take it from average to great" and work with the remote development team to ensure the build aligned to the design.

Opportunity

The Wholesome Child website was going through a design refresh in preparation for the publication of its new cookbook. However the owners felt the design had room for improvement and a more polished UI. With an extremely tight timeline aligned with the book launch, my aim was to simplify the overall UI by limiting the number of fonts, sizes and colours and bringing more space between elements to create a more cohesive design.

Goals

  • Mobile first design approach
  • Limit number of font styles and ensure site is easy to read
  • Create a cohesive UI and experience between pages
  • Tidy up overall design with a visual hierarchy and a balance of elements

Outcome

Working with a remote development team in India proved a challenge when it came to executing the UI. However, with continuous UI reviews in the staging environment I was able to validate the front end implementation and communicate any changes required to ensure the design was executed to the specifications.

The Wholesome Child team were extremely happy with the results; a new polished and professional website to align with the cookbook launch. As a result I was asked to continue work on the website with additional pages and improvements.

"...one of those rare UX designers who has a great aesthetic eye and at the same time retains a strong commercial sense to her designs. She is quick to grasp the project brief, she asks the right questions and rapidly comes back with a range of valuable concepts for further iteration..."
